Requirements for the city hall registration (empadronamiento) in Spain

To register in person in Spain, you need to fulfill the following requirements

Know the exact address of the residence where you will live.
Have the necessary documentation:

  • National Identity Document (DNI) or passport for all persons to be registered.
  • Rental contract, property deed, or document proving the occupation of the dwelling.
  • Authorization from the property owner (if you are not the owner).
  • Birth certificate for minors (if there are children to be registered).

There are some exceptions

  • Foreigners with long-term or permanent residence authorization: They are not required to renew their registration, so they can remain registered indefinitely.
  • Foreigners with temporary residence authorization: They must renew their registration every two years.
  • Foreigners in an irregular situation: They are not required to register, but they can do so if they wish.

What is registration for?
